The Scout statue was originally created for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, by sculptor Cyrus E. Dallin. The statue arrived in Kansas City as a temporary display, but citizens were so moved by its presence that they raised $15,000, around $422,000 today to keep it permanently. Since its dedication in 1922, The Scout has become a mascot for the city, a favorite subject for photographers, and a symbol of endurance through decades of vandalism, restoration, and renewal. Over the decades, The Scout has weathered repairs, debate, and the loss and replacement of many of its details, yet it has remained a steadfast emblem of resilience and civic pride. Its silhouette has inspired postcards, artists, and even the Kansas City Scouts hockey team. Today, The Scout endures as an iconic symbol of Kansas City’s pride in its heritage.
